Chapter Twenty-One

GAVIN

“How is she?” Silas asks, trying to rise from the table again.

Luca pushes him back down and readjusts the Atlantean Crystal hanging over him to assess any damage to his magic.

“She’s fine,” I say. “Worry about you, old man.”

Aviella lies on another table, unconscious, yet still beautiful. She’s beautiful in ways that a girl shouldn’t be able to be because it’s not physical, at least not only. She positively glows in my magic sight, and that glow transfers to her on this plane too.

We collect, train, and save Innocents. I would never have thought there could be something like her. Something that would surprise me after all these years. My brothers and I, our journey through time has been long, and the world has changed even before the Apocalypse. The weight of the ages weighs heavily.

“Yes,” Silas says. “I’m older than all of you put together. So let me do my damn job, I know when I’m fine or not.”

“Silas,” Luca says. “Let us help. She damn near drained you. We can help recharge your magical pools, and you know it. You’re worried about her and about the attack.”

Silas stops fighting, dropping his head back down on the table with a thud.

“Fine,” he says.

Luca re-centers the crystal and activates it again. It pulses blood red, emitting a soft, healing power into Silas. He’ll be fine. The Methuselah almost always is. Almost.

Aviella stirs, and my attention shifts back to her. I’m in the middle of crafting new wards around her which would be a lot easier if she slept longer, but it doesn’t look like I’m going to have a choice. Her eyelids flutter, her lips part, and I’m struck by the fullness of them. The desire to taste them is almost more than I can resist.

“Rafe!” she yells, sitting straight up and sucking almost all the magic out of the room.

It takes us all by surprise. Luca and Silas yelp and I’m dropped to my knees.

“Aviella!” I yell. She looks around wild-eyed, not fully awake and here. “It’s over!”

She raises her hands, magic forming a bright, white ball between them that’s tinged with blue. She blinks rapidly, breathing in ragged gasps. The soft spot at the base of her throat shows that her heart is racing. I touch the calf of her leg and push soothing magic into her.

Her breathing eases, her heart slows, and she lets the magic go. I get up, lean against the table, and let my head clear. Damn, she’s becoming more powerful than even we expected. And she’s not done yet. There’s one more for her to add to our harem before the prophecies will be fulfilled. Only then will she fully awaken the goddess inside of her.

“Sorry,” she says, one hand going to her head as her brow furrows in pain. “Damn.”

“You okay?” I ask.

“My head is splitting. Do we have any aspirin?” she asks.

“I’ll see if we can find some,” I offer. “May I?”

Because of her volatility, I ask before I touch her.
